FAQ: Lash Extensions
-
How long does the service take?
Service times range from one lash artist to another, and one type of lash set to another. A classic or flat set usually takes around 2 hours. For a full volume set, the time commitment is usually around 3 hours. A mega volume set typically takes around 3.5 hours. Artists can combine any of these techniques to create a “Hybrid” set and determine a time frame based on which types of lash sets they’re combining.

Are lash extensions difficult to care for?
Borboleta Beauty has a collection of skincare-infused aftercare to ensure that lash extensions stay clean and beautiful and have great retention. We recommend removing makeup with our Breakdown makeup remover and cleansing lashes daily with one of our Lash Bath cleansers and a Clean Swoop brush. Once guests develop a routine, maintenance is a breeze.
-
Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes?
Absolutely not, as long as the right techniques are used. Borboleta-trained artists follow a specific protocol including applying only the appropriate weight to lashes, using minimal adhesive and applying one lash or fan to each natural lash so that it can shed easily and naturally when it grows out.
-
Can I get my lash extension wet?
Yes! In fact, guests should be cleansing their lash extensions daily. Showers, swimming, etc will not affect lash extension retention.
Just wait the required 24 hours before you get them wet for the first time. After the first 24 hours, carry on like normal.
-
What if I have sensitive eyes? Will I have a bad reaction?
As with any beauty service or product there is always the risk of sensitivity. However, Borboleta-trained lash artists are educated in best practices to prevent this whenever possible, and how to troubleshoot any potential issues if they arise. However, if a reaction does occur, it is always best to recommend that the guest sees a physician.
If you do have a concern, call or email us in advance so we can help!
-
Will lash extensions make me look over done?
This service is totally customizable and can be designed to meet the desired look of any individual. Great lash artists can create styles that are natural and effortless, textured or tailored, or dense and dramatic. The possibilities are nearly endless!
We perform a consult with every new service, but please feel free to bring photos of definite yes looks and even definite no looks.
-
How often do I get my last extensions refilled?
We recommend a fill appointment every 2-3 weeks, as lashes have a natural growth cycle and shed from the follicle as they grow out. If someone decides not to continue with lash extensions they can choose either to grow them out naturally or have them removed by a lash artist.
Every studio is different, but here at Malama Io Studios:
Mini Relash: up to 7 days
Regular Relash: 7-20 days
Extened Relash: 21-30 days
*Any fill after 30 days from your last appointment with us is considered a full set.
-
Why do I need to have a minimum of 50% retention for a regular relash?
During a relash appointment, our staff will remove any loose, crooked or outgrown lashes leaving you with about 25-30% of your old extensions, if you arrive with at least 50% of your extensions still in tact. We spend the rest of our time putting on new lashes to all the healthy, natural lashes.
If you arrive with less than 50% of your extensions in tact, we will not have time to complete a proper relash & allow you to leave with a new full set.
-
What are the different sets?
Natural Highlight Set: 100 lashes on each eye
Classic Full Set: 1-1 extensions, with every healthy natural lash lashed. We don’t count lashes
Hybrid Full Set: a mixture of volume & classic extensions, depending on the look you’re going for.
Volume Full Set: depending on the look & density you’re looking for, we apply 2D-7D lash extension fans to every healthy, lashable natural lash.
We DO NOT Count lashes, and lash every healthy, lashable lash for all set except the Natural Hightlight Set
